CCTV Questions – We've Got the Answers
General Questions
The basics about CCTV systems and how they work.
What's the difference between IP and analogue CCTV?
IP CCTV is the modern way to do it. It sends digital signals over network cables, so you get better picture quality and you can view your cameras from anywhere on your phone. Analogue uses old-style coaxial cables and doesn't give you half the features. We only fit IP systems because they're just better.
How long does the footage last?
It depends on a few things. Higher resolution cameras use more storage, and if you record at 30 frames per second instead of 15, that uses more too. A 1TB hard drive will typically give you between 12 and 40 days depending on your settings. We'll work it all out for you when we design your system.
Can I watch my cameras from my phone?
Absolutely! All our UNV systems come with a mobile app. You can see live footage, check recorded clips, and get alerts when something moves. You can even view them from your computer if you prefer. It's all included in the system.
UNV Cameras
Everything you need to know about our premium UNV camera range.
What makes UNV cameras special?
They've got some clever technology that other brands don't have. Wise ISP image processing and the new TriGuard 1.0 with OwlView models deliver outstanding low-light performance. Simply the best you'll get at night. TriGuard 2.0 stops people from tampering with your system, Light Hunter gives you brilliant night vision, and ColourHunter keeps the colour even in the dark. They're professional-grade cameras that we trust to protect our customers' properties.
Which resolution should I go for?
4MP is good for most homes. Clear pictures without breaking the bank. 5MP gives you better quality and is what we'd recommend for most people. 8MP is for when you need to see every detail, like reading number plates from a distance. And don't be put off by 2MP Ultra Starlight. They're brilliant in low light.
Do they work in the dark?
Yes! They've got built-in infrared LEDs that automatically switch on when it gets dark. The clever bit is they adjust the brightness automatically, so you get clear pictures without blinding your neighbours. Some models even keep the colour at night.
Installation
What to expect during the installation process.
How long does it take?
1–4 cameras typically take half a day. 5–8 cameras usually take a full day. Commercial systems can take longer depending on size and complexity. We'll give you a proper timeline when we do the survey.
What do I need to do before you come?
Make sure you've got power points where we need them, and that your internet connection is working properly. We'll need clear access to where we're fitting the cameras. Oh, and check if you need planning permission.
Do you work in bad weather?
We work year-round, but if it's absolutely chucking it down or there's a storm, we might reschedule. It's better to do a proper job than rush it in terrible conditions. We'll let you know if we need to change the date.
Technical Requirements
Technical specifications and network requirements.
How fast does my internet need to be?
For 4MP cameras, you'll need about 2-4 Mbps upload per camera. 5MP cameras need 3-6 Mbps, and 8MP need 5-10 Mbps. We'll check your broadband speed when we do the survey and work out if it's fast enough.
Can I use my existing network?
Probably, if it's up to scratch. We need Cat5e cable minimum, Cat6 is better for 8MP systems. You'll need POE switches too. We'll check what you've got and let you know if anything needs upgrading.
What happens if the power goes off?
The cameras will go off too, but you'll get a notification on your phone. If you want them to keep working during power cuts, we can fit a UPS backup. It's worth thinking about for critical security.
Legal & Planning
Important legal considerations and planning requirements.
Is CCTV legal?
Yes, as long as you do it properly. You need to have a good reason for recording people, put up signs to let them know, and only keep the footage for as long as you need it. We'll make sure your system complies with all the rules.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not, but it's worth checking if you're mounting cameras above 2.5 metres or if you're in a listed building. Different councils have different rules. We'll help you work out what you need.
Can I record sound?
You can, but there are extra rules. Everyone needs to know you're recording audio, and you need a good reason for doing it. Most people don't need it anyway - the pictures usually tell you what you need to know.
Pricing & Insurance
Costs, insurance benefits, and ongoing expenses.
How are prices worked out?
Prices vary from property to property. The layout, number of cameras, resolution and features, cable routes, and recording/storage needs all affect the cost. We offer a free survey and then provide a tailored quote that fits your needs and budget.
Will it reduce my insurance?
Often yes! Many insurers will knock 5 to 15% off your premiums if you've got CCTV. They like it because it reduces the risk of claims. It's worth checking with your insurer what they need. We can make sure your system meets their requirements.
What ongoing costs are there?
We recommend an annual service, which costs £100-200. Hard drives need replacing every 3-5 years. There are no extra internet costs for remote viewing. We can arrange extended warranties if you want extra peace of mind.
Our Service
What you can expect from Astral CCTV.
Where do you work?
We cover Wakefield and the surrounding areas including Leeds, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Barnsley.
Do you do free quotes?
Yes! We'll come and do a free survey of your property, then give you a detailed quote with no obligation. We'll design a system that fits your needs and budget. No pressure, no hard sell.
What warranty do you give?
The equipment comes with manufacturer warranty (2-3 years), and all our installation work comes with a 12-month guarantee. We're here for ongoing support too. We're not the sort of company that fits your system and then disappears.
Can you upgrade existing systems?
Absolutely! We can add more cameras, upgrade the resolution, or add new features like motion detection. We can even connect your CCTV to other security systems. We'll work with what you've got and make it better.
Looking After Your System
Maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting.
How often should I service it?
We recommend an annual service for most systems. Commercial systems might need quarterly checks. You should test the basic functions monthly. And if something goes wrong, give us a call straight away.
What's included in the service?
We'll clean the cameras, test everything's working, update the software, and check the performance. We'll also make sure the settings are optimised for your needs.
What if something goes wrong?
We're here when you need us. A lot of problems can be sorted out remotely, but if we need to come out, we will. We'll get you sorted quickly and get you back up and running.
Still Got Questions?
We're here to help and we won't make you feel stupid for asking. We'd rather you understood what you're getting than sign up for something that's not right for you.
